WOW! What a beautiful course!

September 7th 2003 was the inaugural 40k Inline marathon "Great Lake Escape" held lakeside in Marblehead, Ohio. This was brought together by Jeff Glaze at www.premierraces.com and Fat Rabbit Racing at www.fatrabbitracing.com along with an Olympic Triathlon and Duathlon.

It took place on the scenic area of Port Clinton near Cedar Point and Kelly's Island.

The start/finish took place East Harbor State Park. The roads were comparable to none I have ever skated on not one sewer cap, railroad track or pothole to dodge.  The view of the Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay with long stretches of road with blue water on each side was equipped with scenes ranked up there with the North Shore Inline Marathon. The course was fast with a few hills and slight wind just enough to make things interesting. See the course map below.

Unfortunately there was not as good a turnout since there were two other races on the same day.  Our friends from Canada were skating in Toronto.  Many of the Pro skaters including most of the Neo/PyroApparel team was skating the half marathon that they previously committed to in Cleveland on the same day.

The results for the first 5 Men and Women spots were:

Men

  1. Travis Smith      (Team Newark Speed)  1:16:59
  2. Keith Ellsworth (Team Neo/X-Cel)        1:16:59
  3. Miguel Jordan   (Team PyroApparel)      1:18:47
  4. Brent Leaman    1:27:52
  5. Gene White        1:28:03

Women

  1. Vicki Mango                                         1:28:02
  2. Mary Mcleod                                        1:33:33
  3. Jane Boback                                         1:35:01
  4. Bethany Mach                                       1:37:34
  5. Pamela Coletta                                      1:37:35

    See you in Duluth,
