Report on Peter's Inline Racing Web Page Photos Roller Sports Ontario Speed Points Series Website
The Roller Sports Ontario Outdoor Speed Points Series kicked off it's 2004 season with some excellent racing action on May 22nd. The series is continuing to grow and is giving Ontario and Canadian skaters the chance to gain some valuable racing experience on home soil. The races took place on a 200 meter track in Kitchener, the training site that the Tri Cities Speed Club uses to train outdoors. It was very difficult for skaters to pass each other when they were at speed. The newspaper and television media were on hand to cover the event. The next race in the series is set for June 26th in Aylmer, Quebec, just a short drive from Ottawa, Ontario. We are trying to plan a race for June 20th in Toronto, the day after the Rolling Rampage 10km race that is taking place in downtown Toronto.

Lindsay Chard, Chelsea Parry, and Keri Chard early on in the morning before the races. Jordan Belchos, myself, and Tom Hanham after the warm-ups. Alex Newdick and Jeff Burnside from the Tri Cities Speed Club. Paul Shoebridge's van. Peter Light showing off his musical skills. Some of the officials, including Wayne Burrett, Mike Belchos, and John Parry. Toronto Inline Skating Club's 3 young stallions: Jordan Belchos, Dean Arndt, and Tom Hanham. There is a possibility that these 3 will be in Italy for the World Championships in September in the Junior races. Camillo Echeverri during his 1500 meter time trial: He placed 2nd overall in that race. Of course, Bont had to be present with a table. The Level 4, 500 meter B-Final is starting. In the race are John Fischer, Alex Newdick, and Austin Belchos. Austin Belchos passed John Fischer with about 70 meters to go to take the win. The Level 1, 500 meter A-Final race is under way. From right to left are Leonardo Echeverri, Aaron Arndt, Jordan Belchos, Camillo Echeverri, and I. Camillo Echeverri had a blazing start, gapping us on the gun, and never looking back. Leonardo Echeverri tried to hawk Aaron Arndt at the line, but got 3rd and a nice crash as well.
CTV was on hand to film the racing action. Keri Chard, the eventual race winner of the Level 3/4 10k race leads Carolyn Gullo and Ross Hanham while Austin Bechos, Sigrid Ziegler, and John Fischer stay on the inside. Tatia Wallace, winner of the Level 2/3 10k race, leads Rhett Cappleman, 2nd place finisher Chelsea Parry, Peter Light, Denni Lo, Ryan Omelia while Lindsay Chard hangs around on the outside. Chard had to drop out of the race due to skate problems. Dennis Lo leads the Level 2/3 10k in the later stages of the race. He skated a super good race, leading and attacking a good part of it, but in the last 60 meters of the race, Dennis slipped and fell. The Level 1 pack circles at the top of the corner. Morgan Willians leads Benoit Joubert, Camillo Echeverri, myself, Leonardo Echeverri, and the rest of the field. In the later stages of the race, Jordan Belchos turned on the offensive, while Camillo Echeverri and Leonardo Echeverri could only try to chase him down. Morgan Williams also gave chase, but came up short. In the end, Herb Gayle (seen in 5th) had a wonderful sprint and managed to overtake Williams but not Belchos for 3rd place. I won the race by going on an early break and lapping the field. Aaron Arndt, Camillo Echeverri, and Leonardo Echeverri after all the racing was done. ©Peter Doucet and www.RaceReports.net |
