Silver Strand Half Marathon
Coronado to Imperial Beach San Diego, CA
   Sunday, November 16, 2003

Randy Bowman

Going to the  Silver Strand Half Marathon on Sunday, November 16, 2003 was a nice race to end the season.  Even though team PYROapparel won the Cactus Classic two weeks prior. We needed one more race to wrap up the season.

The last thing we expected to deal with in southern California was rain so as we drove to the course seeing the wet pavement we were hoping the 10mph winds might help dry up the course at least for part of the race which it did. The wet pavement might have added a couple of minutes to the finishing times but team PYROapparel was still able to come out on top.

The race was put on by Koz Enterprises benefiting the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the local Inline racing club influence is San Diego Street Elite . The race started at 7:00AM on Coronado Island and finished in Imperial Beach. There were165 skater including teams like Bont, Team Safe, San Diego Street Elite, and PYROapparel. Despite the wet pavement the start of the race was fast with Alan Marcosson pushing the pace forming a lead pack of about 12 skaters breaking off the 165.  Then at about mile one early in the race Scott Wolf from Team Safe broke on the first downhill and Randy Bowman of PYROapparel and  Patrick Naylor from Bont chased and caught Scott and formed a small pack changing leads until about mile 5. At this point appearing to be above his anaerobic threshold Patrick Naylor could not or would not take lead so Randy Bowman and Scott Wolf simultaneously broke away on each side and regrouped for the remainder of most of the race.  While this was going on Alan Marcosson and Dana Eads and my self held the chase pack back since we had teammates in the front pack.  Seeing that they were well off Alan Marcosson went on a flier at about mile 4 and skated solo not being able to bridge the gap but fast enough to keep away from the chase pack for the rest of the race only being caught by Dana in the last 2 miles.

Randy and Scott knew the winner would be decided in the stretch of road going through the Naval Radio Receiving Facility which was at about mile 10 having a few turns, rough road and a short but steep uphill with a head wind. With Randys greatest strength being hills and rough road, Randy attacked at this point and Scott had nothing left to catch him. Randy had a strong sprint to the finish with a time of 36:18.
