No rain for the second year at Super Bowl Sunday, Redondo Beach, CA. By Audrey Beach Bladers Inline Skate Team Inline skate race sponsorship coordinator

For the second year in a row, the race was dry! January can be a wet month in California, but we were lucky once again. Not for those who took a tumble at the start line or at the down hill, just before the finish line. Yikes, what a way to start an event, road rash in the first 20 feet with 6.2 miles more to go! OK, so all of those who think it is only a 10k think again, it is 4 miles up and 2 miles down with twists, turns with a downhill finish, whoopee! The start of race was packed with local skaters, even skaters from out of state. There is room for more skaters on this road for sure! On the front row of skaters were the pros from Team Safe who took away the top three wins easily, as there was no other team competition. However, there were lots of local team advanced skaters happy to defend their titles from last year, San Diego Street Elite, OC Speed, Los Rapidos, Beach Bladers, pro teams such as Team Safe, Hyper, Verducci and more. Thanks to Dan Joyce for the great start of the race photos, as he was on hand to help promote the Long Beach Marathon and up coming Disneyworld Marathon.
So the heat was on! Less than 18 minutes later, the finish line was a blur for the pros. The advanced followed through with less than nine minutes passed, followed by the happy recreational skaters 15 minutes after that. There was even a wayward wheel chair racer, guess somebody forgot to tell him about the separate start!
OK with the race over, it was time for awards. Each year I try to surprise the skaters with great prizes and special medals or trophies. The surprise was on me this year, when my fellow teammates who where not going to race at first, made a last minute decision to race and won in their age group! Ya see, you will never know it your going to win, if you do not enter in the event! I have also heard from others "Oh it is only a 10k and we are not going to travel for that distance" Well I can tell you from the happy faces of the 180 skaters that did travel there, they went home with lots and lots of prizes and happy memories. It is only $23.00 to enter (that is if you pre register, a strongly suggested term to do) OK I know I promised not to "toss" anything to the crowd, but there was this bag of mini chocolates from a teammate and bags of almonds from Graber Olives that just happened to be on the prize table! (LOL) The skaters were well prepared, I noticed many helmets still on, hmm, could that be from last year's wayward water bottle toss? With special thanks for the cash, yes CASH from a very unusual sponsor. Who gave us cash, not only for the top skaters (some of whom were less than gracious about it) but even had small amount of cash to give away for some of the first place skaters in age categories. This was most unusual and may not be a yearly possibility. For those who have never been involved with obtaining sponsorship here is a revealing fact. It is not that easy to get sponsors much less cash sponsors!
The thrill of standing on the podium for a second year in a row, ringing a cow bell (more fun than a microphone) and saying loudly I have cash, HELP ME COUNT IT OUT! Is very exciting for all! For those who think getting product and cash sponsors, many trips to the event site with items for the race, arranging the awards area with easy up, 123 podium and boxes at 4 am before the race, then racing myself is easy, think again.
I have heard from a few skaters, how they think it can be done in a snap and I just say, "You have no idea until you have been on the business of an event" what it really takes to put on a race. Hard work, but so worth the energy it takes, when you hear the gun go off at the start line and you know there are no red lights till the finish line.
With even greater thanks to the product sponsors whom make the awards portion of this event so fun. Special thanks to Graber Olives, Rollerblade for the T-shirts, Tiodize for the Speed skate lube and Speed oil, Transpacks, De Feet socks, yes we got socks! Hansen's for lots of Energy drinks and Smoothies, Salomon, gel sliders, Wahoo's (lunch gift certificates) Jimi Caps (for under the helmet) FASST for magazine subscriptions (thanks Lauri)! There were FASST magazines to hand out also, but someone took them off of my patio, before the race (have no idea why someone would take a box of FASST magazines)? Thanks to Rotation Station and Iron Girl for the cool beach towels and socks, as well the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce for the nice finish medals for all! As well as Limar with the helmets that arrived on Monday due to a lost UPS driver! Thanks to Bont skates, Jimi Caps, Verducci skates and Red Bull drinks, whom I heard was in the parking lot someplace…when skate companies would be willing to help out, there might be more races, thus the size of the events may grow too! Perhaps next year we can attract more sponsors for the event, when they hear about the success of this year's race, just a thought. I have to thank Bont Skates, specifically Glenn Koshi, whom year after year has sponsored this event, wondered what happened to Skategrrl whom said she was going to be there, but for some reason never found her way to the event! For those whom chose to sleep in or not even travel to this event you missed a fun race and free beer from Asahi beer, looking forward to seeing even more of you at the next Super Bowl Sunday in 2004.
See you at the start line next year! Results Courtesy of Nlinesk8gal of www.ConteProductions.com and Prime Time race results.
