Adrenaline will surge on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at 7:30 a.m. as the gun signals the start of the largest inline marathon and World Cup event in the U.S.A.! Following the same scenic course Grandma's marathoners have run along for the past 26 years, 5,000 inline skaters will test their endurance in the 9th Annual NORTHSHORE INLINE MARATHON.

Enjoy the country's most scenic and exciting inline skating event along the beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior! The 26.2 mile marathon begins just south of Two Harbors and continues along Scenic Hwy 61, rolling through the I-35 tunnels, and finishing at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC).

There are four categories with placement dependent upon ability.

Professional (Cat. 1)
Elite skaters, $50 thru June 30, $60 for entries postmarked July 1 thru July 31, $70 postmarked August 1 thru August 31, 2004. There are no age group awards in category 1.

Professional Master (Cat. 1M)
Elite skaters 35 to 44 years , $50 thru June 30, $60 postmarked July 1 thru July 31, $70 postmarked August 1 thru August 31, 2004.

Professional Veteran (Cat. 1V)
Elite skaters 45 years or older, $50 thru June 30, $60 postmarked July 1 thru July 31, $70 postmarked August 1 thru August 31, 2004.

Individuals registering for the following categories will be placed in the appropriate category and wave of category based on their previous race times. When and if the wave and category has filled, racers will be put back to the next available wave and category. In order to obtain your requested category wave we recommend you register as soon as possible.

Advanced (Cat. 2)
Skaters with racing experience and capable of completing the marathon with a time under 1:39.13 (tentative), $50 thru June 30, 2004, $60 postmarked July 1 thru July 31, $70 postmarked August 1 thru August 31, 2004.

Fitness and Recreational (Cat. 3 and Cat. 4)
Skaters qualifying in these categories will be seeded in appropriate waves based on past performance or estimated finish time. $50 thru June 30, 2004, $60 postmarked July 1 thru July 31, $70 postmarked August 1 thru August 31, 2004.

Entrants must be 13 years or older on race day.

The race will be held rain or shine. Absolutely no transfers of race numbers will be allowed. No refunds can be given for any reason. No category or wave changes can be accepted after August 31st.

Water will be provided to each skater at the start and finish in cups as well as along the course at 3 different water stops in 10 oz. bottles. However, if water is an issue for you we highly recommend bringing your own.

No registrations will be accepted after August 31, 2004, no exceptions.

Changes in categories and waves will be handled on a individual basis. Categories and waves are assigned based on past performance or in the case of a first time registrant, the estimated time. With a race of this size it is imperative to place skaters of like abilities and pace together as much as possible. Safety is our number one concern. Any changes granted will be assessed a $10 fee prior to September 1, 2004. Changes after that date will not be possible.

A "finisher" shirt will be awarded immediately after the race in Pioneer Hall at the DECC. Sorry, we will not award a finisher shirts to those who do not race or finish. The award ceremony will be at the DECC Arena commencing at 5 p.m. Awards must be picked up at this time, no awards will be mailed. Monitor this web site for any new information.

Wave starts will begin at 7:30 with all Pro men, Pro women, all Advanced men, all Advanced women, Fitness wave 1, Fitness wave 2, followed by recreation waves 3 through 9. For fitness and recreation skaters, the first digit of your bib number denotes the wave that you are assigned.

Helmets and wrist guards are mandatory to participate in the event. (Participants must be 13 years or older) Knee and elbow pads are recommended. Inline skates only. NO roller skis, ski poles, baby strollers, baby joggers, automobiles, skateboards, bikes, bandits, pets, or little red wagons. Headphone use is prohibited.

The Seventh Annual Kids Sprints will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17th on Harbor Drive on the east side of the DECC.

On Friday, Sept. 17th at 7:00p.m. immediately following the kids sprints there will be a fun skate through the city of Duluth. This event is open to all ages and all skaters; you do not have to be registered for the marathon to skate in the Salomon Friday Night Fun Skate. Organized by Zephyr Inline Skate Tours and the Northern Inline Skaters.

Race packets may be picked up from noon Friday, Sept. 17, until 10 p.m. at Pioneer Hall in the DECC, and Saturday at the bus loading area from 5:30 to 6:45 a.m. Chip timing equipment will be available Friday. "Chip volunteers" will be on hand to answer any questions.

The Green Mill all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at the DECC is served Friday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are available through the mail and at the door. The public is welcome. Adults - $8.50. Children 5-12 - $5, under 5 - free. Free prizes will be given away on the hour at the spaghetti feed for those who partake in the feed.

DIVISIONS Large corporations For teams competing for a corporation employing 100 or more people. Only the top 5 skaters will count toward the team total time, regardless of the number of skaters entered on the team. To ensure the coed nature of the competition, of the top 5, a 3/2 split between the genders must be maintained i.e. 3 women 2 men or vice versa. Small corporations For teams competing for corporations employing fewer than 100 people. Only the top 3 skaters will be count toward the team total time. Of the top 3 a 2/1-gender split must be maintained. Skate clubs / advanced teams Clubs and skate associations may enter teams of at least 5 skaters. 5 skaters will count toward the team total time. To maintain the co-ed nature of the competition, of the top 5 there will be a 3/2 split between the genders. Fitness / Recreational teams Friends and families may enter teams of at least 5 skaters. 5 skaters will count toward the team total time. To maintain the co-ed nature of the competition, of the top 5 there will be a 3/2 split between the genders. RULES A separate form needs to be submitted to enter a team. All team members must be entered on this form and all skaters must be entered as individuals as well. Each team must designate a team captain who will be the contact person. The corporation must currently employ skaters or be immediate family members entered in the corporate divisions. Pro category skaters are not eligible for any of the team challenge divisions. AWARDS Each winner of the two corporate divisions will be engraved on a trophy to be kept at Minnesota Powers corporate headquarters. They will also receive a trophy to keep. The winning Skate Club / Advanced team will receive a trophy. The winning Fitness / Recreational team will receive a trophy. A participation award will be presented to the large and small corporate team with the greatest number of team members. It's free and it's fun. Music, suds and a great rib dinner at bayfront festival park (next to the DECC) 5-10 Saturday evening. For those who have never heard Kristi Love and the Boogie Wonderland Band, do yourself a favor and plan to attend this rockin event. Kristi sells out wherever she plays year after year. This is an outside event staged at the new bayfront park on the waterfront. The event is planned to help fund U.M.D. athletics. Enjoy ribs,beans and corn bread all provided by BLACKWOODS GRILL AND BAR. Contact the office for advance tickets. $20 at the door, but only $15 for skaters who puchase in advance.

The skate and fitness exposition will be held in conjunction with packet pickup and the spaghetti dinner. Representatives from the skate and fitness industry will be there to exhibit, answer questions, and sell the latest in products and services. The event is free and the public is welcome.
